Monday July 25th, 2016



First Day of camp!!

This was an exciting day, our class got to know each other, discussed our goals, got into teams, and started working on our business plans. We'll continue to work on our an area of our business each day with a goal of presenting what we've learned at our camp business fair on Friday at 11am! We encourage all parents and friends to come along and see the students portfolio's which will include their business plan, brand image, marketing plan, as well as their business cards and flyers.

Introduction
Class structure, outline, and expectations
  • Discuss daily objectives and schedule, as well as the final class goal, purpose, and business fair on Friday. 
  • Students are expected to participate and work with other classmates in lesson activities. 
  • Students can expect to learn about starting a business and have a portfolio at the end of the week to showcase at the camp business fair. 
Starting a Business -  The Plan
Campers discuss what it takes to start a business, in order to create a product and a brand image for presentation at our business fair Friday. 

Campers learn about business purpose (providing a product/service to...), mission (message to the public), target market (audience/patrons), image (what image are you presenting to the public?), and they'll make a business plan. Examples of branding and marketing campaigns from familiar companies,AppleAT&TWonka CandyBarbie, and others, will be present to campers. Students will learn what it takes to have a successful business and marketing campaign.

    • local, regional, national, or international
  • Business plan
    • purpose, mission, milestones, and goals, business ethics
  • Team roles
    • CEO, CEF, CEM
  • Budget and finance outline

    • logo, website, social media, ads, promotional material 
Starting a Business -  Questions to Ask

Some helpful questions to ask when starting a business:
  • Why are we starting this business? 
  • What is our purpose, mission, milestones, and goals? (See Business Plan Worksheet handout, pages 1 - 4) 
  • What type of business are we looking to start? 
  • What image are we trying to convey with our brand, products, services? 
  • Who are we serving or helping (shareholders, audience, target market)? 
  • How are we different than our competitors? Are we better, equal, worse? What are we adding to the market? Is there a gap we are trying to fill? 
  • Where are we based, located, serving? 
  • Where is our money coming from? How much do we have now, how much do we need to do x, y, z? Do we need a loan? What's the best way to get money? 
Major Project

Campers get into teams and begin brainstorming! "Business Plan and Developing Business Ideas" worksheet handed out to each team. Campers use the worksheet to discuss their business type, make a business plan, select team roles, outline budget and finances, discuss the business size, decide target market and create a marketing plan that includes brand images and logos, discuss business purpose, mission, milestones, and goals, business ethics. Campers will learn about free software and websites to help start up their business. At the end of camp, campers should have completed their worksheet, as well as created an outline for their business including:

Websites, Email, and Design Sites
Campers created and email address, address, and phone number to go on their promotional items, website, and products. We created an email account with Gmail, and Canva, a design website.

Campers worked on Canva, and began to create their branding/image for for their company. Students began making a business card. Campers will also select another promotional item to create, such as a flyer, poster, pamphlet, ad, or social media post. Campers will use Wix.com to make a homepage to their website.

Look Ahead
  • Discuss how each day will go and what they are to expect, and what is expected of them.

  • A list of resources will be handed out on Friday that include helpful information such as business incubators, how to raise money, and where to find mentors, so campers will have the opportunity to fully delve into the entrepreneurial passions! 



BizFair Camp Overview July 2016

Biz Fair Camp (Ages 8-12)

This unique camp gives students a first-hand look at how to start a small business. Campers will brainstorm ideas, collaborate with others, create a product that they will pitch and market to buyers. They will create marketing campaigns and learn about the importance of ads, branding and budgeting. On the last day of camp, campers will participate and experience selling at their very own business fair. Support our young entrepreneurs!

Look Ahead at the Week's Objectives
  • Discuss how each day will go and what they are to expect, and what is expected of them. 
  • Look at Canva for students to create their branding and images.

Tuesday

Review 
Discuss yesterday's lecture and lesson activity, discuss what groups decided on type of business, target market, business mission, and team roles.

Teams to complete any loose ends from Monday and begin to work on budget and finance plans (simple budget worksheet handout).

Creating a Budget and Finance Management 
Annual, monthly, quarterly budgets discussed as well as how various businesses obtain various types of capital.

Once budget completed, teams will focus on portion of budget allocated for marketing and begin working on their brand image and marketing plan.

End of Class
Class to discuss teams progress at the end with the rest of class. Discuss tomorrow's objective and activity plan.

Wednesday

Review 
Discussion of yesterday's lecture and lesson activity, discuss what groups decided on their start-up budget, where they are getting their start-up finances from, their marketing plan outline, and brand image direction.

Branding and Image Design
  • What image are we trying to convey to our audience (target market selected in business plan)
  • 3 c's of design (components, composition, concept)
  • Take into account our business location and ethics when beginning our design and marketing campaign, are we appealing to everyone in our target market and audience?
End of Class
Review of the days activity: finalize a brand image/design for your business card and flyer. Break into teams and work on designs. Class to discuss teams progress at the end with the rest of class. Discuss tomorrow's objective and activity plan.

Thursday 

Review
Discuss yesterday's lecture and lesson activity. Discuss what the groups worked on, and what direction they are taking their brand image/design.

Marketing Strategy and Marketing Plan
Now that we know who our target audience, our business objectives and budget, and have our brand image, we are ready to market ourselves to the public! We've been working and finalizing our business cards and flyers, now that we are ready to have them printed, we need a plan to distribute them. There are a variety of ways that we can expose our image to the public, including printing our own business cards and flyers, social media outlets, radio and television broadcast, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and the most valuable method, word of mouth.
Students will discuss and work as a team their marketing plan and strategy to present to the class tomorrow.

End of Class
Class to discuss teams progress at the end with the rest of class. Discuss tomorrow's objective and activity plan. Get ready for Business Fair tomorrow at 11am!

Friday

Review
Discussion of the weeks lectures; how we came up with a business purpose, mission, plan, budget, audience, image, and marketing plan.

Business Assessment and Analysis 
Students learn about the percent of businesses that fail with in the first five years and the difficulty and challenges of maintaining a business, how a financial plan can change with unexpected expenses. A successful business takes constant checks and balances, and the class discusses how to enforce and regulate ethical and fair assessments and reviews.

Business Fair! 
Class to show their business portfolio complete with final business plan, marketing plan, brand image, business card, business flyer, and product.

  • Small computer or laptop with software able to create simple images and text for our business plans, logos, and marketing strategies.
