First Day of camp!!

This was an exciting day, our class got to know each other, discussed our goals, got into teams, and started working on our business plans. We'll continue to work on our an area of our business each day with a goal of presenting what we've learned at our camp business fair on Friday at 11am! We encourage all parents and friends to come along and see the students portfolio's which will include their business plan, brand image, marketing plan, as well as their business cards and flyers.

Introduction
Class structure, outline, and expectations
  • Discuss daily objectives and schedule, as well as the final class goal, purpose, and business fair on Friday. 
  • Students are expected to participate and work with other classmates in lesson activities. 
  • Students can expect to learn about starting a business and have a portfolio at the end of the week to showcase at the camp business fair. 
Starting a Business -  The Plan
Campers discuss what it takes to start a business, in order to create a product and a brand image for presentation at our business fair Friday. 

Campers learn about business purpose (providing a product/service to...), mission (message to the public), target market (audience/patrons), image (what image are you presenting to the public?), and they'll make a business plan. Examples of branding and marketing campaigns from familiar companies,AppleAT&TWonka CandyBarbie, and others, will be present to campers. Students will learn what it takes to have a successful business and marketing campaign. 

Campers will think about various aspects of starting a business:
  • Business type and size
    • service or product
    • local, regional, national, or international
  • Business plan
    • purpose, mission, milestones, and goals, business ethics
  • Team roles
    • CEO, CEF, CEM
  • Budget and finance outline
  • Target market
    • males, females, children, teen, campers, etc
  • marketing plan
    • logo, website, social media, ads, promotional material 
Starting a Business -  Questions to Ask

Some helpful questions to ask when starting a business:
  • Why are we starting this business? 
  • What is our purpose, mission, milestones, and goals? (See Business Plan Worksheet handout, pages 1 - 4) 
  • What type of business are we looking to start? 
  • What image are we trying to convey with our brand, products, services? 
  • Who are we serving or helping (shareholders, audience, target market)? 
  • How are we different than our competitors? Are we better, equal, worse? What are we adding to the market? Is there a gap we are trying to fill? 
  • Where are we based, located, serving? 
  • Where is our money coming from? How much do we have now, how much do we need to do x, y, z? Do we need a loan? What's the best way to get money? 
Major Project

Campers get into teams and begin brainstorming! "Business Plan and Developing Business Ideas" worksheet handed out to each team. Campers use the worksheet to discuss their business type, make a business plan, select team roles, outline budget and finances, discuss the business size, decide target market and create a marketing plan that includes brand images and logos, discuss business purpose, mission, milestones, and goals, business ethics. Campers will learn about free software and websites to help start up their business. At the end of camp, campers should have completed their worksheet, as well as created an outline for their business including: 
  • Business type and size

    • local, regional, national, or international
  • Business plan
    • purpose, mission, milestones, and goals, business ethics
  • Team roles
    • CEO, CEF, CEM

Websites, Email, and Design Sites
Campers created and email address, address, and phone number to go on their promotional items, website, and products. We created an email account with Gmail, and Canva, a design website.

Campers worked on Canva, and began to create their branding/image for for their company. Students began making a business card. Campers will also select another promotional item to create, such as a flyer, poster, pamphlet, ad, or social media post. Campers will use Wix.com to make a homepage to their website.

Look Ahead
  • Discuss how each day will go and what they are to expect, and what is expected of them. 
  • We'll continue to work on our an area of our business each day with a goal of presenting what we've learned at the end of class on Friday for our Business Fair!   • A list of resources will be handed out on Friday that include helpful information such as business incubators, how to raise money, and where to find mentors, so campers will have the opportunity to fully delve into the entrepreneurial passions!
